Strength Training for the Over 50s

It’s never too late to become stronger.

As we get older, staying strong becomes one of the best ways to protect our health, maintain our independence and continue enjoying the things we love.

Regular strength training can help reduce the risk of falls, improve bone health, increase strength of muscles, tendons and ligaments, maintain independence, reduce the risk of many long-term health conditions, and may even help us live longer.

Perhaps best of all, you’ll simply feel stronger, move more confidently and enjoy everyday life more.

Why Strong For Life Classes?

Many people know they should be doing strength training but simply don’t know where to begin.

Perhaps you’ve never lifted a weight before. Maybe you don’t enjoy the thought of joining a gym. You may have an old injury, arthritis, or another health condition that makes you unsure where to start.

You are not alone.

Strong For Life was created specifically for people who want all the benefits of strength training in a friendly, supportive environment where everyone works at their own pace.

There is no pressure to keep up with anyone else, and every exercise can be adapted to suit your individual ability and requirements.

About Mark

Over the past twenty years, Mark has helped thousands of people improve their health through Tai Chi, martial arts, Qigong and personal training.

Working with students aged from 4 to 105 has shown him that many people want to become stronger but simply don’t know where to begin.

Strong For Life was created to give people a safe, welcoming and enjoyable introduction to strength training—without the intimidation often associated with gyms.

What We Do

Each class focuses on improving the physical qualities that help us enjoy an active, independent life:

  • Strength
  • Balance
  • Mobility
  • Flexibility
  • Coordination
  • Confidence

Using a combination of bodyweight exercises, weights, resistance bands and functional movements, you’ll gradually become stronger in a safe and structured way.

Every exercise has easier and more challenging options, allowing everyone to work at a level that’s right for them.

Why Strength Matters

The White Crane Academy philosophy is that your physical activity with us – whether that is Strong for Life, Tai Chi, or personal training – should improve and make your everyday life easier.

Simple activities such as carrying shopping, climbing stairs, gardening, getting up from the floor, lifting grandchildren or walking longer distances all become easier as strength improves.

Many members also notice:

  • Better posture
  • Improved balance
  • Increased confidence
  • More energy
  • Better movement
  • Greater resilience
  • Improved quality of life

A Friendly Community

One of the things our members value most isn’t just becoming stronger—it’s becoming part of a welcoming community.

Our classes are relaxed, encouraging and supportive. Everyone remembers what it felt like to walk through the door for the first time, so new members are always made to feel welcome.

Whether you’re returning to exercise after many years or trying strength training for the very first time, you’ll quickly feel at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve never done strength training before. Is this class suitable for me?

Yes. Most people who join have little or no previous experience. The class caters for beginners and those returning to exercise.

Do I need to do the Strong for Life Foundation Course (add a link) before joining the weekly class?

No, you can start your first class anytime and there is no need to do the course first.

Some people like to do the 4-week course to give themselves a bit of an introduction to strength training, or to assess their current level of strength and fitness, or to learn a few basics before starting the class.

Alternatively, some people do one-to-ones along side the class (add link to one-to-ones).

I’m not very fit. Will I hold everyone back?

Not at all. Everyone works at their own level, and all exercises can be adapted to suit individual ability.

What if I have arthritis or an old injury?

Many of our members have existing health conditions or previous injuries. Exercises can usually be modified to work around these safely. If you’d like to discuss your situation before attending, please get in touch.

Do I need to bring any equipment?

No. Everything you’ll need is provided.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing you can move in, trainers and also bring a bottle of water.

How often should I attend?

Most members attend once or twice each week and combine this with regular walking or other activities. Perhaps another WCA class – strength training and Tai Chi is a perfect combination.

Am I too old to start?

Absolutely not.

One of the greatest myths is that strength training is only for younger people. In reality, becoming stronger is one of the best investments we can make at any age.

The best time to start was years ago.

The second best time is today.
